The Rural Fire Service members who are ever ready to deal with threatening and devastating fires in the local community are now angry and for good reason it seems. This is apparently over the spending of as much as $10 million and unnecessarily at that. The sum was actually used in hiring more staff of eighty people. But the task to be done wasn’t as threatening as done by the main fire fighting team.
The additional staff would be assigned with a task of hazard reduction as a norm done by volunteers. But then one would do well to also look at the fact that in recent times the falling number of volunteers for the same tasks. In accordance with this, even the Volunteer Fire Fighting Association president stated the same. According to him (Peter Cannon), he observed how the Rural Fire Service is becoming a completely paid service as like before when volunteers happily chipped in. the State Mitigation Support Services at the heart of it supports the RSF by clearing Fire hazards and over grown fire trails for that matter.
As of now the team has fifteen members working even as the body is recruiting ore members.
They will also assist in the Rural Fire Service's Assist Infirm Disabled Elderly Residents program. The volunteers have actually gone on record stating these to be "Granny's gutter cleaning teams" among others. In fact they also have gone on to the extent of stating the program to be "Shane's mowing and slashing service". This is of course referring to Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons.
In the mean while there are still a huge number of volunteers who seem to be fuming angrily over the decision, as made by the RSF. There are still as many as 70,552 members who feel cheated and the fact that they were just not consulted before going ahead with the plans. These volunteers go on to the extent of calling the RSF to be rather bureaucratic
Talking of the number of volunteer coming down, they have come down by almost one thousand in numbers. At the same time as many as nine hundred paid staff will be in place by 2012. Now compare this with the fact that there were 685 staff members earlier. Then there are additional costs of $26.9 million annually and about $30.5 million that the RURAL Fire Service gave to purchase as many as on 205 new tankers.
